At the ripe age of thirty, Erie J. Sauder embarked on a business venture inside his own barn creating wood crates and cabinets for area farmers. It was 1934 and near the end of the Great Depression, from whence many entrepreneurial kindred spirits became survivors out of necessity. Expanding the business to create church pews for area churches in 1937 was another market niche which Mr. Sauder found himself successful in. From there, Sauder further expanded into the occasional table market with his scrap wood mini table creations. By the 1970s, Sauder had tested the waters with mobile home cabinets. During the 1980s, the look of real wood at affordable prices brought about the invention of paper-wrapped cabinets with faux wood appeal. As consumers gained more disposable income, they wanted creations of real wood so back to real wood it was. Creating power from sawdust may have sounded like an insane idea in 1993, but it certainly has proven quite successful as it is still used in the plant today. Innovative ideas, from the first RTA “drop-down" table to creating unique ways to use scrap materials, have made Sauder a uniquely diverse and trend-intuitive company.
