The Versatile Platform Bed

While once considered to be strictly modern, platform beds are now available in a variety of designer styles. Platform beds are perfect for that trendy sleek look. Since they sit lower to the floor than a standard bed, a platform bed can make the room appear larger and more spacious.

Platform beds have become increasingly popular in the last decade because they combine the comfort and convenience of a futon with a standard bed frame. Deceptively simple in design, a platform bed usually has a minimal rectangular form, often without a headboard or a footboard.

Reasons for Buying a Platform Bed

  • If you want to purchase a platform bed for an already furnished room, they are available in a range of styles, sizes, and materials, suited to most decor from traditional to transitional to modern.

  • Because a platform bed does not use a box spring, a platform bed is more economical.

  • Without the weight of the box spring to worry about, they are easier to move.<

  • Many platform bed designs include under-the-bed drawers, storage boxes or shelving units with sliding doors.

  • Depending on the style, a platform bed can eliminate the space underneath the bed that can contribute to the gathering of allergy irritants like dust and pet dander.

  • What Size of Platform Bed Do I Need?

Since you will be purchasing a platform bed to fit a particular mattress size, here is a brief outline of the most common sizes available. Before making a final decision, make sure that your bed will fit your space.

Twin A twin bed, also known as a single bed, is 39” wide and 75” long. Twin beds are a popular choice for a child’s room or a guest room. The extra long single bed is a variation on the regular twin. It is the same width but is 80” long. Because of the additional length, it is better suited for a teen or an adult when furnishing a dorm room or a teen’s bedroom.
Double The double bed, also called a full bed, is 54” wide and 75” in length. For two people, sleeping space for each person is 27”. It is a popular choice for a single person or a couple furnishing a smaller sized bedroom. When buying a double platform bed, note that many of them will be able to accommodate a queen mattress.
Queen The queen bed is 60” wide and 80” long. This is the most popular choice for two people. The sleeping area provided in a regular queen bed for each person is 30”.
King The standard king bed is also known as the eastern king. The width is 76" and the length is 80”. This size is the widest standard sized bed available. The sleeping area per person is the same as for a twin bed ($39”).
California King The California king bed, also referred to as the western king, is 72” wide and 84” in length. It is the longest standard sized bed available with the total sleeping area for one person is 36”. It's important to note that the California King is slightly narrower than a regular king bed.

What Type of Platform Bed should I select?

While many platform beds offer simply an elevated place to put your mattress, some platform beds are available with additional design elements. Whether you are looking for added storage or simply for a more dramatic design, our vast selection ensures that there will be no problem finding the right platform bed for you.

The sleigh platform bed is a popular choice. This style features a headboard (and sometimes a footboard) with a gently sloping design, reminiscent of a wooden sleigh.

Panel beds have solid headboards and footboard that usually feature three inset panels. Usually panel detailing is mostly vertical, but it can also be horizontal.

Try a canopy or four poster platform bed for another way to create a dramatic focal point in a master bedroom. These add extra height are designed to hold the mattress closer to the floor than a regular bed.

A popular choice for a child’s or teen’s room is the captain’s platform bed. This style of platform bed places the mattress on top of a set of drawers or a combination of drawers or cubbyholes, converting the unused area beneath the bed into convenient storage. They are ideal for decorating a room with nominal closet space. To add even more storage options, select a captain’s bed with a bookcase headboard.

What Kind of Material Should I Choose?

Platform beds are available in a wide variety of materials. Your particular needs and your budget will have a big effect on what material is right for you.

If you are looking for a high quality piece that can be passed along to the next generation, real wood is the perfect choice. While heavier and more expensive than the other alternatives, wood offers classic appeal that other options can't match.

Veneers or engineered wood are some others options that is a high-end choice that provide real wood finishes with a more durable finish. Thin slices of real wood are glued to the piece of furniture using heat and pressure. Since it can be applied to any smooth, flat surface, this is a popular material for ready-to-assemble bedroom furniture. Since it is not as expensive to manufacture, it also gives furniture the texture and appearance of genuine solid woods, while keeping costs down. This style can also be more eco-friendly as it uses less wood.

For an inexpensive and durable finish, laminate is the perfect choice. Laminates are formed into sheets of material, produced by pressing layers of plastic, metal or wood together. The surface is then sealed with a thermosetting resin. They are commonly used as a finish for home furnishings because they are durable, easy to care for and economical. A laminate surface can have a simulated wood grain, be a solid color or have a pattern such as stripes. Laminate is generally used in conjunction with an MDF base.

Metals are a popular material for platform beds because they are strong and durable. Frames made from sheet metal are more solid than ones made from tubing, but a bed made from heavy gauge tubing will retain strength and durability, while being lighter and less expensive to ship.

What Style of Platform Bed Should I Select?

Let your imagination run wild! Platform beds are now designed to fit into every type of design scheme from formal to country to contemporary.

Some types of platform beds, like the sleigh bed and the four poster bed, are synonymous with traditional style. Their silky smooth finishes, graceful curves and flowing lines have been inspired by the trends and social customs of the past. Traditional platform beds can vary from the elaborate fussiness of Victorian times to the simple Colonial designs.

Transitional style merges contemporary and traditional styles together making a transitional platform bed capable of blending in with a wide range of designs and fashions. This style is known for contrasting austere lines with intricate curves, and natural wood finishes with lustrous metal accents. It also mainly uses neutral palette finishes like taupe, espresso and vanilla. Transitional bedroom furniture, like a platform bedroom set, makes it a good choice for decorating a bedroom because it is eclectic and flexible.

Emerging from the second half of the 20th century, contemporary style celebrates the essential elements. Modern and contemporary bedroom furniture is known for its simplicity of line, shape and form. Look for other hallmarks of contemporary such as geometric motifs, chrome accents or upholstered panels combined with natural wood. Silver, white and black are also popular choices for modern style.

Country furniture merges traditional style with rustic charm. A country platform bedroom set is comfortable, cozy and welcoming. Colonial, French Country or Mission country style furnishings are almost always constructed of wood, ranging from light to medium finishes. Some of the more common types of finishes are grainy, painted or distressed. Country furniture can include whimsical details like hand-painted stenciling, hand-carved insets and soft, graceful curves.

Quick Tips: What Else Should I Keep In Mind When Choosing a Platform Bed?

    • When purchasing a platform bed, take into account that without a box spring underneath for support, the mattress might feel less firm than what you are accustomed to.

    • Many full/double beds can accommodate a queen mattress by providing an extra set of rail slots about three inches on each side of the headboard and footboard.

    • Depending on the brand or manufacturer the same can apply to standard king and California king bed frames. This may leave a slight gap on either side of the mattress.

    • Even though a platform bed tends to be lower to the floor, when purchasing a four poster or canopy bed, make sure that the posts will not be too close to the ceiling or that the canopy will not block any overhead lighting.

    • Platform beds with an elevation feature will allow you to position your bed so that you can comfortably read or watch television.

    Platform Storage Beds

Many different types of platform beds include a variety of under-bed storage options, which make them welcome additions to rooms with space issues. Most types of under-bed storage include a number of drawers that slide out much like an oversized dresser drawer.

Platform storage beds are available in all standard bed sizes including queen and king sizes. A specific kind of twin size platform bed designed for children’s bedrooms is called a captain’s bed. Just like with regular platform beds, platform storage beds are an economical type of bed since they don't require a box spring mattress.

A platform storage bed is ideal for storing a variety of things such as linens, extra towels and bedding. Under-bed storage is perfect for clothes as well, especially if the room is small and closet and/or drawer space is at a premium.

    Platform Storage Bed Features

Platform storage beds come with a number of different features that address particular storage solution problems. They commonly include drawers on one or both sides of the bed. A platform storage bed can also come with drawers on the end of the bed as well as on the sides. This is handy for small rooms where you really need to maximize storage space. Give some thought to what you would like to store in your platform bed and make sure you leave enough room to open the drawers.

Perhaps one row of storage drawers will be enough. But if you would also be able to tuck away seasonal clothing as well as bedding and extra linens, a wood platform bed with two rows of storage drawers will be a better choice for you. A storage platform bed might also include other storage features, like a bookcase headboard that can house a small book collection.

    Buying Platform Bed Sets

Platform bedroom sets are a great way to get what you need without having to spend time matching each bedroom furniture piece separately. This is because a platform bedroom set is designed to be in scale (the nightstand is sized to “work” with the bed and/or the dresser), have a uniform color and be the same style. Platform beds, especially metal platform beds are commonly linked to contemporary and modern styles because of their spare appearance and clean lines. However, manufacturers offer platform beds and platform bed sets in a variety of styles including traditional.

    The Platform Bedroom Set

Manufacturers typically offer platform bedrooms sets in collections that often come with a choice of what type of bed. Determine the number of pieces you want in your platform bed set and what type of bed will be most useful to you. Platform bedroom sets can include a bookcase headboard platform bed, a canopy platform bed, storage platform bed or a sleigh platform bed. Particularly when decorating a smaller sized bedroom, a 3-piece platform bed set will provide you with the basics, such as a platform bed, storage drawers and a nightstand or a platform and two nightstands.
