Lexington began back in 1903 as the Dixie Furniture Company. The success of Henry Ford’s assembly line provided the idea to streamline furniture production. In 1940, Dixie introduced the automated conveyor belt—the first time this was done in a furniture company. During the 1950s and 60s, Dixie Furniture branched out into four different divisions focusing on different sectors of the furniture market. This proved to be a rather successful business venture. The four brands were eventually merged into one called Lexington Furniture Industries. Partnering with lifestyle brands such as Tommy Bahama, Lexington became the first company to create the lifestyle retail model that many companies emulate today. Lexington has come a long way in the furniture market, surviving not only the Great Depression but every other economic challenge it has faced. This determination to create great products at prices that budget-conscious consumers can enjoy has helped to keep Lexington up-front and center in today’s furniture industry.
