Buying a Mattress for Your Child - Online Buying Guide by Heather B (abridged)

When its time to buy a mattress for your child, the determining factor will be the child's developmental age.  However, no matter what age your child is, your child is still growing.  The mattress you purchase for them should be supportive and comfortable, while being kind to a developing spine.

    • Does your child suffer from allergies?  Many manufacturers offer eco-friendly models that are ideal for hypoallergenic children.
    • Certain types of children's beds don't require a box spring, such as the captain's bed or day beds.  Otherwise, you're purchasing a mattress for a standard type of bed, plan on buying a box spring or foundation at the same time.  A good foundation supports the mattress and stabilizes it, improving the overall quality of your child's sleep.
    • You know its not going to last forever, but you'd want it to last as long as possible.  In addition to safety issues, a "no jumping in bed" rule will protect your child's mattress from unnecessary wear and tear and possible irreparable damage.
    • When shopping for a mattress for a child with a specific back condition, firm isn't necessarily better.  Good support means that when an adult or child lies down on a mattress, it supports the person's spine and keeps it in perfect alignment as though the person was standing up.
    • Because they are kids, there will be "accidents".  And no matter how many times you tell them not to eat in bed, they will.  A good moisture-resistant mattress protector fits over the top of the mattress like a fitted sheet and can be removed easily when it needs to be washed - much easier than having to spot clean the mattress itself.

Regardless of which type of mattress you decide to buy for your child, an innerspring mattress or a foam mattress should have the following characteristics:

    • Should be firm
    • Should fit snugly against the walls of the crib or bed
    • Should keep its shape and provide proper support
    • Should come with a protective surface or cover of some kind to increase the durability and water resistant capabilities of the mattress
    • Should have fabric binding on the seams to allow air escape, relieving pressure on the seams caused by movement
    • Should have vents, helping circulate air throughout the mattress, and preventing build-up of odors
